Linocut. Printed on polycotton fabric (white) with Caligo safe-wash relief ink (black).
Hand-printed using a Victorian copy press; printed, interfaced and overlocked by the artist.
A celebration of female strength and power, ‘Veni,Vidi,Vici’ is based on a medieval depiction of a crowned vulva carried by 3 phalluses (Van Beuningen family collection, Langbroek).
The artist has produced a stylised version of the original; posing the vulva in the style of the Virgin Mary as depicted in Catholic iconography, replete with halo; medieval scrollwork, composed in the popular in Western ‘old school’ tattoo style; and the choice of motto - attributed to Julius Caesar, and popularly quoted in a macho and militaristic context - in this case subverted by the ultimate symbol of femininity dominating the symbols of masculine power and virility.
